ROX Capital Group has launched the ROX Gulf Energy Storage Platform to identify, develop and deploy energy storage technologies for utility-scale and commercial projects in the UAE and Oman. The UAE-based real assets investor and developer said the platform will focus on battery and long-duration energy storage technologies while also evaluating opportunities for regional assembly and manufacturing.

The platform will assess multiple energy storage technologies, including vanadium redox flow batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries and sodium-ion batteries. It will also evaluate long-duration energy storage technologies such as CO₂ batteries, gravity-based storage, compressed-air energy storage and thermal storage. ROX said the broad technology portfolio is intended to address different energy storage requirements across projects in the region.

ROX plans to establish regional partnerships with selected technology providers across these categories. The company said partners will be selected based on their track record in deploying high-capacity, utility-scale energy storage projects, proven long-duration storage capabilities where relevant, financial and operational capacity to support major projects, and ownership or control of the core intellectual property behind their technologies.

The company will prioritise technology providers with bankable systems, established manufacturing capabilities and the ability to provide long-term technical support, performance assurances and warranties. ROX and its technology partners will pursue upcoming energy storage tenders and assess local assembly or manufacturing opportunities where the commercial case is viable.

Robin Antony, Founder of ROX Capital Group, said the Gulf is developing some of the world’s largest solar projects, increasing the need for energy storage to keep clean electricity available after sunset and during periods of peak demand. He added that no single technology can meet every requirement, while the region’s climate, load profile and energy-security priorities support the need for a broader portfolio of storage technologies.

The ROX Gulf Energy Storage Platform is also connected to the company’s initiative to retrofit an existing UAE tower as a net-zero skyscraper. ROX intends for the project to demonstrate how building-integrated energy storage can support lower-carbon buildings and more resilient urban energy systems. Under the platform, ROX will contribute local market knowledge, project development capabilities, stakeholder relationships and capital alignment, while technology partners will provide proven systems, technical expertise and manufacturing know-how.
