Skoda Auto India has announced a strategic pivot: while it will introduce a broader range of its international models in India from 2026 onward, its electric-vehicle (EV) launch in the country is being deferred for now.
According to Brand Director Ashish Gupta, the company plans to focus initially on bringing “globally successful” combustion-engine or hybrid models to capture the premium and performance-conscious segment of India’s market. Meanwhile, the EV rollout remains on hold, citing the evolving Indian EV ecosystem, prevailing regulatory uncertainty and absence of a finalized national EV policy.
Škoda’s decision to delay its EV introduction comes amid several headwinds: high import duties, under-penetrated charging infrastructure and a consumer base still highly cost-sensitive. The company emphasises that its global electrification drive remains intact, but that India requires “careful, phased” entry into full-scale EV deployment.
At the same time, the brand is proactively strengthening its presence in the Indian market through its existing portfolio. With cars like the Škoda Kushaq, Škoda Slavia and Škoda Kodiaq already resonating with buyers, the company aims to introduce more completely built units (CBUs) and possibly locally assembled models under its “India 2.5” strategy.
Despite the EV delay, Škoda reiterated its long-term commitment to the Indian market. The automaker said it is continuing investments in research & development, localisation and production capacity so that when conditions are right, the transition to electrification can happen swiftly and sustainably.
Looking ahead, the company noted that its India strategy will keep a dual focus: expanding its internal-combustion and hybrid-powered line-up now, while readying itself for a future EV launch once the policy environment, charging infrastructure and cost dynamics become more favourable. As government incentives under schemes like FAME III mature and state-level EV frameworks evolve, Škoda may bring vehicles tailored for Indian conditions in the coming years.
