In a significant policy move aimed at promoting electric mobility, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the extension of the 100 per cent motor vehicle tax exemption for all battery-operated electric vehicles (EVs) in the state until December 31, 2027. The decision, formalised through a government notification under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974, was shared by the State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa on Wednesday.

The exemption covers both transport and non-transport battery-operated EVs, including electric two-wheelers, cars, autos and commercial EVs, providing continued relief to consumers and investors alike. This extension will be effective from January 1, 2026, and remain in force through the end of 2027.

Addressing the media, Minister Rajaa said the decision reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting EV adoption, affordability and large-scale manufacturing in Tamil Nadu. He emphasised that the move underlines the administration’s pro-industry and sustainability focus, as the state continues on its path toward cleaner and greener transport.

According to the minister, the adoption of battery-operated vehicles in the state reached approximately 7.8 per cent in 2025, signaling growing interest among buyers but also highlighting the need for continued policy support and infrastructure development, particularly in charging stations and a greener supply chain.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the extension, observing that motor vehicle tax can add significant upfront cost to EV purchases. By retaining a full tax waiver, the state hopes to narrow the price gap with conventional petrol and diesel vehicles and encourage more consumers to make the shift to electric.

Analysts say that this sustained tax incentive will not only benefit buyers but also provide long-term certainty for manufacturers and investors considering capacity expansion or new product launches in Tamil Nadu, which has emerged as one of India’s key hubs for EV production and related components.
