Tamil Nadu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vikram Solar to establish a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing plant with an investment of ₹15,037 crore. The proposed facility will be developed at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli, further strengthening the state’s position as a leading destination for renewable energy and advanced manufacturing investments.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with senior officials from the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce and representatives of Vikram Solar. The agreement marks one of the state’s major investments in energy storage manufacturing, supporting India’s clean energy transition and domestic battery ecosystem.

According to the state government, the project is expected to create around 2,670 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The proposed manufacturing facility will enhance India’s battery energy storage capabilities while supporting the growing integration of renewable energy into the national power grid.

Vikram Solar was represented at the signing ceremony by Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer Arun Mittal, and Capital Investment Project Director Ashwini Agarwal. The company has been expanding its manufacturing footprint in India and views energy storage as a key pillar of the country’s evolving clean energy landscape.

The investment aligns with Tamil Nadu’s strategy to attract high-value projects in renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and sustainable technologies. The proposed BESS plant is expected to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities, encourage technology development and contribute to the growth of India’s energy storage value chain.

With demand for battery energy storage rising alongside renewable power capacity, the project is expected to play an important role in supporting grid stability and clean energy deployment. The partnership between the Tamil Nadu government and Vikram Solar further reinforces the state’s commitment to becoming a leading hub for next-generation energy manufacturing in India.
