Tesla has launched the Cell Giga Challenge, a new innovation programme designed to accelerate battery cell manufacturing at its Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in Germany. The initiative invites startups developing advanced battery manufacturing technologies to collaborate with Tesla and test their solutions in a real production environment. The programme aims to improve the quality, efficiency, and scalability of battery cell production.

The challenge is open to startups working on technologies related to materials, equipment, manufacturing processes, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI). Tesla is looking for innovations that can deliver measurable improvements in production quality, manufacturing speed, operational safety, cost efficiency, and large-scale battery cell manufacturing.

According to Tesla, selected participants will progress through a structured evaluation process that includes application screening, technical discussions, and presentations before Tesla experts. The most promising startups will have the opportunity to conduct paid pilot projects alongside Tesla’s battery cell team at Giga Berlin, allowing them to validate their technologies under real manufacturing conditions.

The Cell Giga Challenge is being organised in collaboration with JUNI, a Berlin-Brandenburg startup platform operated by UNITE gGmbH and supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs through the EXIST programme. The initiative is intended to accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies from startups into industrial-scale battery manufacturing.

The programme supports Tesla’s ongoing expansion of battery cell production at Giga Berlin. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to increase the facility’s planned annual battery cell production capacity from 8 GWh to 18 GWh, backed by an additional $250 million investment. The expansion is expected to strengthen Tesla’s European battery manufacturing capabilities and support future electric vehicle production.

Applications for the Cell Giga Challenge are open until 24 July 2026, with the programme scheduled to begin in August. Through this initiative, Tesla aims to foster collaboration with innovative startups while accelerating the development of next-generation battery manufacturing technologies that can enhance production performance at Giga Berlin and support the growing global electric mobility industry.
