UltraTech Cement is expanding the electrification of its logistics operations and plans to scale its heavy-duty electric truck fleet to more than 600 vehicles by December 2026. The Aditya Birla Group company is undertaking the move as part of its efforts to reduce emissions across its supply chain and strengthen its green logistics strategy.
To support the expansion, UltraTech Cement has signed service contracts with leading electric prime mover manufacturers, including Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion and Sany. The company will also work with their subsidiaries and third-party logistics providers for the deployment of the electric trucks across its transportation network.
The planned fleet of 600+ electric trucks will be used to transport around 5 million metric tonnes of clinker and other key materials every year. The electric trucks will operate across Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha, covering several important routes within UltraTech’s supply chain.
According to UltraTech, once fully operational, the electric truck fleet has the potential to reduce net annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1.17 lakh tonnes. The deployment is also expected to displace diesel consumption equivalent to approximately 39 million litres annually, highlighting the potential impact of heavy-duty vehicle electrification on industrial logistics.
UltraTech has been steadily increasing the use of cleaner transportation solutions. The company introduced CNG trucks in its logistics operations in 2021 and began deploying electric trucks in 2024. It currently operates more than 850 trucks as part of its green logistics operations, including both CNG and electric vehicles.
The latest electric truck expansion is aimed at extending UltraTech’s sustainability efforts beyond its manufacturing plants and across its wider value chain. The company’s logistics electrification strategy covers activities ranging from mine-to-plant transportation to inter-plant movement of clinker and other materials. The initiative also supports UltraTech Cement’s broader objective of reducing emissions and progressing towards its Net Zero commitment.
