In a significant move for sustainable mobility, Dutch public transport operator EBS has placed an order for 73 battery-electric buses from BYD to serve the province of Zeeland. The order comprises 64 standard 12-metre buses and 9 articulated 15-metre buses — a step that signals strong commitment to zero-emission public transport.
According to the plan, the first of these electric buses are expected to be delivered by summer 2026, with full fleet deployment under the brand name Reizen Door Zeeland commencing in December 2026 when EBS takes over the Zeeland concession. The move comes as part of EBS’s broader push to substitute conventional diesel buses with modern, emission-free alternatives.
EBS says the design of these new buses has been shaped with active input from over 200 passengers, drivers, and community-stakeholder groups to ensure passenger comfort and accessibility. The interior will feature purple upholstered seating aligned with Reizen Door Zeeland’s brand identity, with green priority seats for better visibility, USB-C charging ports at every seat, onboard free Wi-Fi, and dedicated wheelchair-accessible areas with high-contrast grab-rails and stop buttons designed for ease of use.
Beyond comfort and accessibility, the initiative underscores environmental and social significance: the new electric fleet will help reduce CO₂ emissions, lower noise pollution, and provide more modern, reliable transport across towns and rural areas in Zeeland — meeting growing demand for sustainable mobility. For BYD, the order reinforces its standing as a major supplier of electric buses in Europe and adds to its expanding footprint in the region’s public transport landscape.
In preparation for the new fleet, EBS is coordinating with local authorities to build charging infrastructure and ready bus depots in Zeeland. This infrastructure work is crucial for smooth operations once the electric buses go into service.
Overall, this development marks a key milestone for Zeeland’s public transport — combining clean energy, commuter comfort, inclusivity, and modern mobility. For residents and travelers in Zeeland, the arrival of these 73 BYD electric buses may soon mean a cleaner, greener, and more comfortable journey.
