Volvo Buses, in partnership with Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV), has inaugurated a 10,000-square-meter electric bus manufacturing plant in Cairo. Built in just 12 months, the facility will focus on producing electric buses for European markets, underlining Volvo’s push for sustainable urban mobility.

The plant will manufacture the Volvo 7900 Electric, Electric Articulated city buses, and the Volvo 8900 Electric for both city and intercity routes. The first units are expected to roll out this fall. Despite ongoing construction, MCV had already begun building complete Volvo e-buses in 2024, supplying operators in Europe, including De Lijn and Transdev in the Benelux region.

This development follows Volvo’s 2023 decision to end independent complete bus manufacturing in Europe and shift to trusted body-building partners. MCV was chosen as the exclusive producer of Volvo’s 7900 and 8900 electric bus ranges for Europe.

The Cairo plant is equipped to meet global standards of quality and production, giving Volvo greater flexibility to adapt its vehicles to specific regional requirements. It also expands the company’s capacity to meet rising demand for electric public transport solutions across Europe.

Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, said the collaboration with MCV highlights the value of working with experienced bodybuilders worldwide. She pointed to MCV’s strong UK record as proof of its capabilities, adding that the new facility strengthens Volvo’s commitment to delivering sustainable, zero-emission buses at scale.

The launch marks a major step in Volvo’s global expansion strategy, reinforcing its vision for cleaner public transportation and supporting Europe’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
