ARK Energy Secures Grid Approval for Major NSW Project

ARK Energy has achieved a major milestone for its Richmond Valley Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project after securing approval to connect the facility to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). The approval paves the way for the large-scale renewable energy project to move closer to construction and future operation in New South Wales (NSW).

The Richmond Valley project, located near Casino in northern NSW, is planned as a hybrid renewable energy facility combining a 435 MW solar farm with a battery energy storage system of up to 475 MW and 2,200 MWh. Once completed, it is expected to rank among the largest solar-plus-storage developments in Australia.

According to ARK Energy, the project has received the required connection approval from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and transmission network provider Transgrid. The approval confirms that the project meets Generator Performance Standards and can connect to the local 330 kV transmission network through the planned Richmond Valley Switching Station.

The company described the grid connection permit as a significant step forward for the project. Hybrid renewable energy facilities that integrate solar generation with large-scale battery storage are becoming increasingly important as Australia continues its transition toward a cleaner and more flexible electricity system.

The Richmond Valley Solar and BESS project forms part of ARK Energy’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy generation and energy storage capacity across Australia. The development is designed to improve grid reliability by storing solar energy and delivering electricity when demand is high or solar generation is lower.

With the grid connection approval now secured, ARK Energy will continue advancing the project toward its next development stages. The project is expected to play a key role in supporting NSW’s clean energy transition while strengthening the state’s renewable energy infrastructure for the years ahead.
