BASF has announced the launch of Oppanol N PLUS, a new binder solution developed to support the growing demand for advanced electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies. The product was introduced at The Battery Show Europe 2026 and is designed to enhance battery performance, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency as the automotive industry accelerates its shift toward electrification.
The newly launched material builds on BASF’s long-standing expertise in polyisobutene (PIB) technology and is tailored for use in next-generation battery systems, including emerging solid-state battery designs. As automakers seek batteries with higher energy density, improved safety, and longer operational life, innovative materials such as Oppanol N PLUS are expected to play an increasingly important role in battery development.
According to BASF, the binder helps maintain strong adhesion between battery components while preserving the structural integrity of electrodes and electrolytes. Its elastic properties allow it to absorb mechanical stress generated during repeated charging and discharging cycles, helping batteries maintain stable performance over extended periods of use.
The company also highlighted the material’s chemical stability, which reduces the likelihood of unwanted reactions within the battery cell. This characteristic supports consistent electrochemical performance and contributes to improved durability, making the solution suitable for high-performance EV battery applications.
In addition to its technical advantages, Oppanol N PLUS has been developed with a focus on manufacturing consistency. BASF stated that the product’s controlled specifications can help battery manufacturers reduce process variations, streamline production, and improve overall quality management. The company is also offering flexible packaging options and improved supply availability to support customer requirements.
The launch of Oppanol N PLUS coincides with the 95th anniversary of BASF’s polyisobutene technology, which has been used across a range of industrial applications since its introduction in the early 1930s. With this latest innovation, BASF aims to strengthen its position in the battery materials sector while supporting the development of safer, more efficient, and longer-lasting energy storage solutions for the future EV market.
