BMW Group has announced a major transformation of its historic Munich manufacturing facility as part of its long-term electric mobility strategy. The company is converting the plant into a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) production hub to support the upcoming Neue Klasse generation of EVs. This move highlights BMW’s commitment to accelerating its transition toward sustainable and future-ready mobility solutions.

As part of this transformation, BMW is investing around €650 million to modernize the Munich plant. The upgrade includes new production systems, advanced automation, and digital manufacturing technologies that will improve efficiency and flexibility. The facility is expected to become a fully electric vehicle production site by 2027.

The company has also rebuilt large sections of the plant while continuing regular vehicle production. Reports indicate that nearly one-third of the factory has been redeveloped, including the addition of a new body shop, modern assembly lines, and improved logistics infrastructure to support EV manufacturing.

BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse EV models, including the next-generation BMW i3, will be produced at this facility. These vehicles will be based on a new electric-only platform designed to improve performance, range, and efficiency while reducing production costs through optimized manufacturing processes.

The transformation also focuses heavily on digitalization. BMW is implementing its iFACTORY production strategy, which uses AI, robotics, and smart manufacturing systems to improve quality control and streamline operations. These technologies are expected to make production faster, more precise, and more cost-effective.

With this development, BMW is reinforcing its position in the global EV market while future-proofing one of its oldest plants. The Munich facility will play a key role in the company’s next phase of electrification as it prepares to launch multiple Neue Klasse electric models in the coming years.
