Chandigarh has taken a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly transportation by inaugurating four solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs. This initiative aims to integrate renewable energy with EV infrastructure, ensuring fast, reliable, and clean charging facilities for the growing number of EV users in the city.
In the first phase, four strategically located hubs have been set up to provide convenient access to EV owners. These locations include the IT Park, which features the highest capacity rooftop solar panels, New Lake Parking in Sector 42, Botanical Garden Parking, and the New Grain Market in Sector 39. The IT Park hub is equipped with a 500 kWp solar system, of which 230 kWp is dedicated to EV charging and battery swapping, while the remaining capacity supports other infrastructure needs.
Each hub is also equipped with battery storage systems to ensure uninterrupted service even during cloudy weather or nighttime. This setup guarantees consistent charging availability and builds user confidence in the network.
The project operates under an OPEX (Operational Expenditure) model, eliminating the need for upfront government funding. This model encourages private sector participation, making the network’s expansion financially sustainable and scalable.
From an environmental perspective, these solar-powered charging stations will reduce dependence on conventional power sources and significantly cut carbon emissions from the transportation sector. This aligns with Chandigarh’s broader vision of achieving net-zero emissions and promoting sustainable urban development.
Looking ahead, the success of these four hubs will serve as a foundation for expanding a citywide solar-based EV charging network. The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) will use insights from this pilot project to shape future strategies for cleaner and greener mobility solutions.
