The Delhi government has announced that it will soon clear the ₹140 crore worth of pending subsidies under its Electric Vehicle (EV) policy. This move comes after a directive from the Delhi High Court, which noted that administrative delays and irregular cabinet meetings over the past two years had left around 2,19,000 EV owners waiting for their dues.

These pending payments are part of the Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy 2020. The subsidies include incentives for 1,09,000 two-wheelers and 83,724 three-wheelers. So far, the government has already disbursed ₹177 crore under this scheme to promote clean mobility in the capital.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot confirmed that the department is currently scrutinizing all subsidy applications to ensure timely and accurate disbursal. To prevent such delays in the future, a dedicated online portal is also being developed to streamline the subsidy release process.

The Delhi High Court bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela strongly criticized the government’s reasoning that the lack of a fixed timeline in the policy caused the delay. The court stressed that procedural hurdles cannot be used to deny rightful benefits to EV owners.

The current EV policy has been extended until March 31, 2026, while work is already underway on EV Policy 2.0. The upcoming version is expected to expand coverage, increase incentives, and accelerate EV adoption in the city, reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustainable transport and clean mobility.
