The Delhi government has unveiled plans to install around 7,000 new electric vehicle charging stations across the city by the end of 2026 as part of its broader strategy to reduce harmful vehicular emissions and promote clean mobility, officials said on Monday. The move aims to encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles and improve the city’s air quality.

According to government officials, this expansion in charging infrastructure is designed to address the increasing demand for EV support systems in the national capital, where current numbers fall far short of requirements. As of December, Delhi had 8,849 charging stations against a projected need of 36,150, leaving a significant infrastructure gap that the new plan seeks to bridge.

The initiative is linked to a larger target of strengthening public transport in Delhi to reduce reliance on private vehicles. Under the proposed transport plan, the government intends to add more than 2,000 buses to the city’s fleet before the end of 2026, including modern electric buses, officials said.

In a recent high-level review on air pollution control measures, authorities determined that Delhi needs a total fleet of 11,000 buses to support efficient and sustainable mobility. The city currently operates 5,245 buses, including 3,377 electric buses, highlighting the gap that the expansion plan seeks to fill.

Officials also shared that a month-wise action plan has been drafted, with a near-term target to add about 2,468 new buses during the year, though some older CNG buses may be phased out as part of the transition.

Alongside infrastructure development, the government is coordinating with the Delhi Traffic Police to ease road congestion, which remains a challenge tied to pollution levels. Traffic authorities have identified several congestion hotspots and are working through a list of remedial tasks to improve traffic flow in key areas.
