Envision Energy has secured a major battery energy storage system (BESS) contract in South Africa, signing an agreement to supply a 660 MWh energy storage solution for the landmark Naos-1 hybrid renewable energy project. The project is being developed in partnership with SOLA Group and construction company WBHO, marking another significant milestone in Envision’s growing presence across the African clean energy market.
The Naos-1 project will be developed near Viljoenskroon in South Africa’s Free State province and will combine a 300 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 660 MWh battery energy storage system. Once operational, the hybrid facility will provide reliable renewable electricity to commercial and industrial customers through South Africa’s national electricity grid, supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner and more dependable energy sources.
As part of the agreement, Envision Energy will deliver a complete battery storage solution covering system design, manufacturing, commissioning, and long-term operational support. The company will also provide advanced energy management technologies designed to improve battery performance, operational efficiency, grid stability, and overall system reliability throughout the project’s lifecycle.
In addition to supplying the battery storage system, Envision and SOLA Group have entered into a 25-year Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA). Under this arrangement, Envision will oversee operations and maintenance services to ensure the storage system delivers consistent performance while maximizing asset life and supporting uninterrupted renewable power generation.
The Naos-1 development is expected to become one of South Africa’s largest privately contracted hybrid renewable energy projects to achieve financial close. By integrating large-scale solar generation with battery storage, the project aims to improve energy security, reduce dependence on conventional power generation, and provide flexible electricity solutions for businesses across the country.
The agreement highlights the growing global demand for integrated renewable energy and battery storage solutions. As countries continue investing in grid modernization and clean energy infrastructure, projects such as Naos-1 demonstrate how advanced energy storage technologies can enhance renewable power reliability while accelerating the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
