GM Expands Energy Business with Vehicle-to-Grid EV Technology

General Motors (GM) has unveiled a major energy strategy aimed at transforming electric vehicles into active energy assets capable of supporting the power grid. The company announced new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities that will allow compatible EVs to send electricity back to the grid, helping utilities manage rising power demand while creating additional value for EV owners.

The initiative builds on GM’s existing vehicle-to-home technology, which enables electric vehicles to provide backup power during outages. Through a software update, eligible GM EV owners will be able to participate in utility programs that allow stored battery energy to be supplied to the grid during periods of peak demand.

GM revealed that more than 250,000 bidirectional-capable electric vehicles are already on U.S. roads. The automaker believes this growing fleet can serve as a significant distributed energy resource, helping improve grid reliability as electricity consumption increases due to electrification and the rapid expansion of AI-powered data centers.

To support the rollout, GM is working with utility providers including PG&E and DTE Energy through pilot programs designed to test vehicle-to-grid services. Participating EV owners could potentially receive incentives, credits, or lower electricity costs by supplying power back to the grid when demand is high.

In addition to V2G technology, GM announced plans to strengthen its energy storage business through partnerships focused on sodium-ion battery development and battery recycling. The company is collaborating with Peak Energy on sodium-ion storage solutions and expanding its work with Redwood Materials to support large-scale energy storage and battery reuse projects.

The latest announcement highlights GM’s ambition to become a major player in the energy sector beyond vehicle manufacturing. By integrating EVs, energy storage systems, and grid services, the company aims to support a more resilient electricity network while creating new opportunities for customers to benefit from their electric vehicles.
