Himadri Speciality Chemical-backed Sicona Battery Technologies has secured up to AUD 45 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to accelerate the commercialization of its advanced silicon-carbon anode materials. The funding is aimed at supporting the scale-up of next-generation battery technology for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage applications, strengthening Australia’s growing battery manufacturing ecosystem.

The investment has been awarded under ARENA’s Battery Breakthrough Initiative and will support the development of a commercial-scale demonstration facility at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla site in New South Wales. The facility will manufacture Sicona’s proprietary SiCx silicon-carbon anode material, which is designed to enhance lithium-ion battery performance while remaining compatible with existing battery production processes.

Sicona’s silicon-carbon anode technology is expected to improve battery energy density by up to 20% and enable charging speeds of up to 40% faster than conventional graphite anodes. These performance improvements can help electric vehicle manufacturers deliver longer driving range, faster charging, and improved battery efficiency without requiring significant changes to current manufacturing infrastructure.

The commercial-scale demonstration plant will also validate Sicona’s manufacturing technology and produce qualification samples for battery manufacturers and automotive OEMs. This step is expected to support customer evaluation, accelerate commercial adoption, and prepare the company for future large-scale production.

For Himadri Speciality Chemical, the funding represents another milestone in its strategy to expand its presence in the global battery materials sector. The company continues to invest in advanced battery technologies that support the transition toward cleaner transportation and sustainable energy storage solutions.

The latest investment highlights the increasing global demand for high-performance battery materials as the EV market continues to expand. By advancing the commercialization of silicon-carbon anode technology, Sicona aims to support the development of more efficient lithium-ion batteries while reinforcing Australia’s position in the global battery supply chain.
