AET: Tunwal E-Motors has expanded to 19 plus states with over 450 dealers. What has been the biggest driver of EV adoption in Bharat and semi urban markets, and how do these markets differing from metro cities?
Jhumarmal: The biggest driver has been the clear economic advantage that electric two-wheelers offer. Consumers today are looking for practical mobility solutions that reduce everyday commuting costs, and EVs deliver through significantly lower running and maintenance expenses.
Customers in these specific markets also evaluate purchases differently. Their decisions are driven by affordability, range, reliability, after-sales service and overall cost of ownership, whereas buyers in metro cities tend to place greater emphasis on technology, connectivity and premium features. This understanding has shaped our approach of combining reliable products with a strong dealer and service network that customers can depend on.
AET: Having entered the EV industry at a time when many companies struggled to survive, what key business decisions helped Tunwal E-Motors remain resilient and continue growing through market volatility?
Jhumarmal: We have always believed that building a sustainable business is more important than pursuing rapid expansion. From the outset, our focus was on understanding customer needs, strengthening dealer relationships and creating a foundation that could support long-term growth.
By consistently offering reliable and affordable electric mobility solutions backed by a robust distribution and service network, we have been able to navigate market fluctuations while continuing to grow in a disciplined and sustainable manner.
AET: The company is focused on affordable mass market electric mobility. How do you balance affordability with product quality, technology, and customer expectations in such a competitive market?
Jhumarmal: Affordability and quality are not mutually exclusive if operational efficiencies are built into the business. We continuously optimise our manufacturing processes, strengthen our supply chain and work closely with long-term supplier partners to source quality components at competitive prices.
At the same time, we focus on technologies and features that genuinely enhance the ownership experience instead of adding unnecessary complexity. The objective is to deliver products that offer the right balance of quality, performance, reliability and value for the mass market.
AET: Tunwal is strengthening localisation under the Make in India vision. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges in building a truly indigenous EV manufacturing ecosystem in India?
Jhumarmal: Strengthening localisation is central to our long-term strategy and our commitment to the ‘Make in India’ vision. Greater local sourcing enhances supply chain resilience, improves cost efficiencies and enables us to deliver better value while supporting India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
India has a significant opportunity to establish itself as a global EV manufacturing hub, backed by strong engineering capabilities, a growing domestic market and supportive policy initiatives. Realising that opportunity, however, will require a deeper supplier ecosystem, local production of critical components and sustained investments in technology, innovation and skills.
AET: With strong FY26 revenue growth of 55 percent and rising demand for electric two wheelers, what trends do you believe will shape the next phase of India’s EV market, particularly in the value segment?
Jhumarmal: The industry’s next phase of growth will be led by the value segment, where customers are increasingly prioritising reliability, affordability and lower ownership costs over premium features.
We also expect stronger demand from semi-urban and rural markets as charging infrastructure improves, localisation increases and products become more tailored to diverse customer requirements. Going forward, competitive advantage will be defined not only by the product itself but also by the overall ownership experience, supported by the robust after-sales service and a strong dealer network.
AET: Looking ahead, what is your long term vision for Tunwal E-Motors, and what role do you see the company playing in accelerating India’s transition to affordable and sustainable electric mobility?
Jhumarmal: As the industry evolves, we will continue investing in technology, product development and customer experience while strengthening our manufacturing and distribution capabilities. More importantly, we aspire to play a meaningful role in making electric mobility accessible to more Indians and contributing to the country’s long-term sustainable mobility goals.
