PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme has given a major boost to electric vehicle (EV) adoption across the country, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday. The innovative demand incentive programme has helped accelerate EV sales across various segments, marking rapid transition toward cleaner, sustainable mobility.

Under the scheme, buyers of electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), three-wheelers (e-3Ws including e-rickshaws and e-carts), e-ambulances, and e-trucks receive upfront purchase incentives. These incentives are reimbursed to vehicle manufacturers, effectively lowering the upfront cost for consumers and encouraging greater EV uptake nationwide.

As of January 27, 2026, the PM E-DRIVE scheme has supported the sale of more than 22.12 lakh electric vehicles. Of these, approximately 19.19 lakh are electric two-wheelers and 2.93 lakh are three-wheelers, contributing significantly toward the national EV adoption targets.

The programme’s impact extends beyond personal mobility. A substantial push has been made in the public transport segment, with Rs. 4,391 crore earmarked for deploying 14,028 electric buses. Most of these buses are slated for use in major urban centres such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat, helping reduce pollution and improve urban commuting.

Officials highlighted that the scheme’s targeted incentives have played a critical role in driving demand, especially in the last year when EV adoption has been strong. With sales rising and industry support growing, policymakers say the scheme is helping India shift toward cleaner mobility solutions while also supporting domestic EV manufacturing.

While the PM E-DRIVE scheme continues to push EV adoption, analysts note that wider infrastructure support—such as strengthening charging networks and expanding service facilities—will be key to maintaining long-term growth in the sector. Industry stakeholders are also urging continuation and enhancement of supportive policies in upcoming budgets to sustain momentum.
