In a push to make electric mobility more accessible and flexible, SparkCharge described as the world’s largest EV-fleet charging network has launched its first off-grid, mobile DC fast-charging hub in the U.S. Northeast. The new installation is located at Zipcar’s maintenance facility in East Boston, a neighbourhood classified as an Environmental Justice community.

The pilot project is being carried out in partnership with Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), under its InnovateMass programme. It’s designed to serve a rotating fleet of Zipcar EVs, enabling rapid on-site charging so that vehicles can be quickly dispatched to riders across Greater Boston — including rideshare users and Zipcar members.

At the heart of the installation is a mobile battery-powered trailer capable of delivering 320 kW DC fast charging. Instead of relying on heavy grid upgrades, the system draws supplemental energy from Zipcar’s existing onsite power to recharge its batteries between sessions. This makes the solution fast, flexible and cost-efficient, especially in areas where building permanent charging infrastructure could be expensive or slow.

According to SparkCharge’s Founder and CEO (quoted in project announcements), the deployment aims to demonstrate that “fleets can deploy at scale, in any community, and deliver clean mobility today.” The company argues the initiative goes beyond charging — pointing to a future in which shared electric vehicles help deliver equitable access, cleaner air, and mobility freedom for all.

For MassCEC, the hub represents a model for future EV infrastructure deployment, particularly in neighbourhoods historically underserved by public charging. As per MassCEC’s senior director of Technology-to-Market, the goal is to ensure that “every resident deserves access to clean, reliable transportation.” The project aligns with Massachusetts’ broader ambition to meet net-zero emissions targets by 2050.

Leaders at Zipcar have also welcomed the collaboration. According to the company’s president, the partnership with SparkCharge and MassCEC will allow faster, more reliable EV charging “directly to our members and rideshare drivers,” making sustainable transportation more accessible across Boston.
