In a major boost for India’s clean energy and manufacturing ambitions, Waaree Energies one of the country’s leading renewable energy firms has announced plans to develop the nation’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh. The facility will be built by Waaree’s energy storage arm, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, as part of a strategic push to strengthen domestic battery production and reduce reliance on imports.

The proposed gigafactory will be constructed in the Rambilli area of Anakapalli district and will see a total investment of around ₹8,175 crore. Designed as a greenfield project with state-of-the-art infrastructure, it is expected to have an initial manufacturing capacity of 16 GWh, covering the full battery value chain from cell manufacturing to battery packs and large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Officials involved in the announcement said that the project has already received in-principle approval from the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The approval marks a key milestone in the facility’s development, with groundwork and planning now moving ahead toward execution.

The gigafactory is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs, with additional indirect employment opportunities as the facility’s operations scale up. State ministers have described the project as a significant step in Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a hub for clean energy manufacturing, expanding beyond solar and wind power into advanced energy storage technologies.

Government and industry experts have welcomed the move, noting that large-scale battery production is vital for supporting the growth of renewable power, electric mobility, and grid stability. Currently, India relies heavily on imported lithium-ion cells and components, particularly from China. Establishing a domestic gigafactory is seen as a strategic effort to strengthen supply chains and improve energy security.

For Waaree Energies, the investment represents a major expansion beyond its core solar panel business into the broader energy transition landscape. With this project, the company aims to position itself as a key player in India’s evolving battery ecosystem, aligning with national goals of self-reliance and clean energy growth in the coming decade.
