The Maharashtra government has introduced its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2025, aiming to position the state as a leader in sustainable transportation. With a substantial budget allocation of ₹1,993 crore, the policy seeks to accelerate EV adoption, enhance charging infrastructure, and reduce vehicular emissions across the state.
A cornerstone of the policy is the provision of financial incentives to make EVs more accessible. Buyers of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers are eligible for subsidies up to 10% of the vehicle’s cost, while electric goods vehicles and tractors can avail up to 15%. Additionally, EV owners will benefit from exemptions on road tax and registration fees, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership.
To support the growing number of EVs, the policy emphasizes the development of robust charging infrastructure. Charging stations are planned at intervals of every 25 kilometers along major highways, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. This initiative aims to alleviate range anxiety and promote longer EV journeys.
In a move to further incentivize EV usage, the policy introduces toll exemptions for electric four-wheelers and buses on key expressways. On other state and national highways, these vehicles will receive a 50% toll concession, making electric travel more economical and appealing to a broader demographic.
The policy also sets ambitious targets for EV penetration: 40% for two-wheelers, 30% for four-wheelers, and 15% for buses by 2030. These goals are part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner air quality throughout Maharashtra.
Industry leaders have lauded the policy’s comprehensive approach. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., described it as “forward-thinking,” highlighting its potential to drive significant growth in the EV sector. Tata Motors has expressed commitment to supporting the state’s vision through expanded EV offerings and collaboration on infrastructure development.
