Akaysha Energy has officially brought its much-anticipated Brendale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) into commercial operation in Queensland ahead of the original timeline, marking a significant milestone in the state’s transition to a more resilient and renewable-focused electricity grid.

The 205 MW / 410 MWh Brendale BESS, located at the South Pine substation in Brisbane’s outer northern suburbs, was successfully commissioned close to five months earlier than planned, according to company officials. The system is expected to play a critical role in supporting the National Electricity Market (NEM) by providing fast-acting energy storage and grid services.

Featuring Tesla Megapack 2 battery units and advanced grid-forming capabilities, the Brendale BESS will help stabilise electricity supply by balancing supply and demand in real time and supporting voltage stability across the Queensland transmission network. These capabilities are seen as vital, especially as more variable renewable generation enters the market.

Akaysha Energy Chief Executive Officer Nick Carter praised the early delivery of the project as a “massive achievement” for the company and its delivery partners. He emphasised that the system’s functionality, paired with a long-term revenue arrangement with global energy trader Gunvor Group, will help deliver reliable and affordable energy for consumers.

The project’s revenue model is underpinned by a Battery Revenue Swap Agreement with Gunvor Group, which provides Akaysha with both contracted income certainty and the flexibility to optimise participation across energy and frequency control markets. This approach reflects a broader trend in financing large-scale energy storage infrastructure in Australia.

Construction and commissioning of the Brendale BESS involved collaboration with several key partners, including engineering contractor Consolidated Power Projects Australia, Tesla as technology provider, Wilson Transformer Company for electrical equipment, and Powerlink Queensland for grid connection services. The asset strengthens Akaysha’s expanding portfolio of battery projects in Australia, complementing other operational and under-construction systems such as the Ulinda Park BESS.
