In a decisive move toward sustainable operations, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has launched a fleet of 40 electric bulker trucks at its Zinc Smelter in Debari, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The deployment, managed under an eight-year contract, is part of the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 (or sooner) and marks a major step in decarbonising its logistics chain.
Under this initiative, the electric trucks will carry calcine a sand-like material resulting from zinc roasting from the Debari facility to HZL’s Chittorgarh smelter, one of the world’s largest integrated zinc-lead production sites. The first 10 trucks have already been launched, and the remaining 30 are slated for phased deployment over the coming months.
HZL has partnered with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd. for this move, and simultaneously signed an MoU for the future deployment of electric buses at the Debari site to replace diesel-powered employee transport, thus cutting further emissions in its scope 3 footprint. The shift to electrified logistics is expected not only to reduce carbon output, but also to improve reliability, fleet safety, and operational efficiency.
To support this transformation, GreenLine Mobility Solutions (in collaboration with HZL) will invest around ₹400 crore (USD ~45.7 million) to expand its electric truck operations and construct India’s first commercial-scale battery-swapping infrastructure, along with a doubling of HZL’s fleet of LNG-powered trucks raising that number to 200 for long-haul transport of finished goods. This dual approach aims to balance short-haul electric solutions with cleaner long-distance logistics.
HZL’s clean mobility push aligns with its broader sustainability agenda: the company has already entered a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement, adopted energy efficiency upgrades (e.g. variable frequency drives, turbine upgrades), and integrated LNG and other cleaner fuels into its value chain. By combining these efforts, Hindustan Zinc aims to lead the metals and mining sector in green logistics, contributing meaningfully to India’s green industrial ambitions.
