The Municipal Corporation Ludhiana (MCL) has formally floated a tender to install 50 electric vehicle charging stations across the city, aiming to strengthen the local green mobility ecosystem and support the rising number of EVs on its roads. The move is part of MCL’s push to expand charging infrastructure in this major industrial hub.
The tender, floated under a 10-year public-private partnership (PPP) framework, invites developers and charge point operators to plan, build, operate, and maintain the charging stations. By offering long-term contracts, the civic body seeks technical expertise from experienced players while leveraging private investment in EV infrastructure.
Officials pointed out that electric vehicles now make up about 6 % of all vehicle registrations in Ludhiana, with electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and passenger cars steadily rising. However, the city currently lacks widespread charging facilities, creating “range anxiety” among EV users, a gap this tender aims to address.
Each charging hub will be equipped with AC and DC chargers, modular battery-swapping points, and modern digital services such as mobile app booking, RFID/QR code authentication, and integrated digital payments. For safety and reliability, installations must include weatherproof infrastructure, CCTV surveillance, fire safety provisions, and drainage systems designed to resist waterlogging.
Under the user-pays revenue model, MCL will receive a minimum of ₹1 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity dispensed at the chargers. The municipality will also share in advertising and branding revenue generated at the charging hubs, enhancing the city’s income streams from this infrastructure.
The civic body will provide land parcels for the charging stations and coordinate with electricity distribution companies to ensure stable power supply at each site. MCL officials said the project is expected to accelerate EV adoption, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and position Ludhiana as a forward-looking city in sustainable urban mobility planning.
