State-owned power company SJVN has highlighted a growing mismatch between renewable energy capacity additions and actual demand from power distribution companies, raising concerns about the pace of clean energy procurement in India. The company noted that while renewable energy projects continue to be awarded at a rapid rate, demand from buyers has not increased proportionately.

According to SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, the renewable energy sector is witnessing a situation where project capacities are being added faster than the market’s ability to absorb them. He stated that several renewable energy implementing agencies are facing similar challenges as power purchasers remain cautious in signing long-term agreements.

The company revealed that it has awarded around 16 GW of renewable energy projects across solar, wind, hybrid, and storage segments. However, power sale agreements have been secured for only a portion of this capacity, reflecting the current slowdown in procurement by distribution utilities.

SJVN emphasized that state distribution companies are becoming increasingly selective while purchasing renewable power. Utilities are now focusing on maintaining a balanced energy mix and ensuring grid reliability, which has influenced the pace at which new renewable energy contracts are being finalized.

The company also pointed out that future power procurement strategies are expected to rely on a combination of renewable and conventional energy sources. As electricity demand patterns evolve, buyers are looking for solutions that can provide reliable and round-the-clock power supply while supporting clean energy goals.

Despite the present demand gap, SJVN remains optimistic about the long-term outlook for India’s renewable energy sector. The company believes that continued policy support, infrastructure development, and stronger coordination between developers and power purchasers will help accelerate renewable energy adoption and support the country’s energy transition objectives.
