Volkswagen has officially opened pre-sales in Germany for its new 125 kW full hybrid versions of the Golf and T-Roc, expanding its electrified vehicle lineup with self-charging technology. The latest hybrid models are designed to deliver improved fuel efficiency, lower CO₂ emissions, and the ability to drive on electric power during everyday journeys without requiring external charging infrastructure.
The new hybrid system combines Volkswagen’s 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.6 kWh high-voltage battery. Instead of relying on charging cables or public charging stations, the battery is automatically replenished through regenerative braking and energy generated while driving. This setup enables temporary all-electric driving at low speeds while maintaining the convenience of a conventional petrol vehicle.
According to Volkswagen, the full hybrid system delivers a combined output of 125 kW (170 PS) and 309 Nm of torque, providing stronger acceleration and greater efficiency than comparable mild-hybrid models. The Golf Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds while offering fuel savings of around 10–15% compared with the Golf 1.5 eTSI. In urban driving conditions, fuel efficiency improvements can reach up to 35%.
The hybrid powertrain operates automatically across three driving modes to maximise efficiency. At lower speeds, the electric motor powers the vehicle independently, while a serial hybrid mode uses the petrol engine as a generator to recharge the battery. During higher-speed driving, both the petrol engine and electric motor work together to deliver enhanced performance and smoother acceleration. Drivers can also choose between Eco, Comfort, and Sport driving profiles to match different driving preferences.
Volkswagen says the introduction of the new full hybrid technology strengthens its electrification strategy by offering customers an alternative between existing mild-hybrid (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) models. The company plans to introduce an additional, higher-performance version of the full hybrid system in the near future, further expanding customer choice across the compact hatchback and SUV segments.
Pre-sales for the new Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid have begun in Germany, with prices starting at €41,400 for the Golf Hybrid R-Line and €44,470 for the T-Roc Style Hybrid. Volkswagen expects the self-charging hybrid technology to appeal to drivers seeking lower running costs, reduced emissions, and electric driving capability without depending on external charging infrastructure.
