Tripura to Install 45 EV Charging Stations

Tripura is set to install 45 new electric vehicle charging stations across the state before the upcoming Durga Puja festival, officials said Wednesday. The initiative was announced by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath as part of a broader strategy to boost clean transportation infrastructure.

The move aligns with the state’s existing EV policy, adopted in 2022, which aims to facilitate the adoption of 60,000 electric vehicles over five years. The upcoming charging network is intended to ease “range anxiety” and catalyze EV uptake across Tripura.

Minister Nath emphasized that the initiative is in harmony with the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose national programs—such as the Solar Mission and EV Policy pledge to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond EV infrastructure, the state’s railway network has been fully electrified and is awaiting final approval from the Railway Board a move expected to significantly curb the state’s carbon emissions from the transport sector.

Tripura is also enhancing its focus on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. With depleting natural gas reserves, the state is increasingly turning to sustainable alternatives. Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, 694 households in Tripura have already installed solar panels to generate decentralized power.

So far, the transport department has installed a charging station at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala. Additional planned locations include the Chandrapur Interstate Bus Terminus, Radhar Nagar, and Nagerjala Bus Stand, where installations are underway or proposed.
